How this Young Filipino Achieved Work and Study in Canada

Moving abroad and to an unfamiliar place is one of the hardest journeys to go through.
For Gerard, 27, he was driven by his ambition to achieve his goal of studying in Canada.

Gerard is a recent graduate of Centennial College in Scarborough, where he took a graduate certificate in project management and graduated last December, 2020. Prior to studying in Toronto, he graduated from De La Salle university in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in Applied Corporate Management.

While in the Philippines, he realized that project management was becoming more and more important in his industry. “It is going to be the future of work and unfortunately the program is not offered in the Philippines,” recalling when he was pondering on moving to Canada from the Philippines.

Despite his many apprehensions, questioning why study in Canada, his family’s support allowed him to power through. Being a proponent of preparedness, Gerard appreciated Education Ventures’ initiative to help him prepare mentally and emotionally for his big move to Canada.

Gerard completed the Project Management post-graduate program at Centennial College. "It really requires effort and time to complete," Gerard says when recounting that his one-year full-time program was packed with at least six courses a semester. As a graduate, he had the chance to work in a multinational company while in Canada.

“I come from the Philippines where we have mostly Asian values. Now I'm here in North America working another professional job, in a multinational company. And it really helps me experience the work culture and how things are being run here in Canada.”
